Our mission
We aim to publish accurate, fair, and independent reporting on Mexico and issues relevant to our readers.
Accuracy and verification
We verify information before publication. We seek primary sources when feasible, corroborate claims, and distinguish confirmed facts from analysis or developing reports.
Sourcing and attribution
We attribute information to sources whenever possible. Anonymous sources are used sparingly and only when there is a compelling public-interest reason and the information cannot be obtained otherwise; the identity should be known to senior editors, and the use of anonymity should be explained to readers to the extent possible without compromising safety.
Independence and conflicts
Staff and contributors must disclose conflicts of interest. We do not accept gifts, favors, or payments that could compromise editorial judgment.
Fairness and harm minimization
We seek to represent subjects fairly and to avoid unnecessary harm. We consider the public interest when reporting on private individuals and sensitive events.
Opinion vs. news
We label opinion and analysis. News reporting aims for neutrality in tone and a clear presentation of verified facts; commentary may adopt an argument but must still be grounded in accurate information.
Corrections, clarifications, and updates
We correct factual errors promptly and transparently. Corrections should state what was wrong and what has been corrected, and (where feasible) remain attached to the article so readers understand the change.
Retractions
We retract when an article’s central claim is materially false or cannot be supported, or when ethical breaches materially undermine trust in the reporting. Retractions should explain why the article was withdrawn and what readers should understand going forward.
Bylines and accountability
We use bylines and contributor credits to support accountability. When a story is produced by multiple staff, we may use multiple bylines or an editorial desk byline.
AI and automation (optional policy position)
If we use automated tools (e.g., for transcription or translation), editorial staff remain responsible for accuracy. We do not publish AI-generated content as “reported news” without human verification and attribution standards.
Ethics foundation
We align our newsroom norms with widely recognized journalism ethics principles, including the emphasis on accuracy, accountability, and prompt correction of mistakes described by the Society of Professional Journalists.
