A purse disappeared inside a Hipódromo Condesa restaurant, and a white car soon became the lead. Police say the same trio later turned up blocks away in Roma Sur after a street victim pointed them out. Investigators now believe the two incidents are connected, and a preventive search turned up items that could clarify how the robberies were carried out. The case is being reviewed by prosecutors, while officers urge residents and visitors to report thefts quickly so camera footage can be secured.
Restaurant theft reported in Hipódromo Condesa
Mexico City police say the case began on February 25, 2026. A Canadian visitor reported her bag stolen inside a restaurant in Hipódromo Condesa, in the Cuauhtémoc borough. Officers responded and began reviewing nearby video surveillance with analysts at the C2 Centro command center, authorities said. The footage, police say, showed two women and one man leaving and driving away in a white vehicle. Investigators used that image to open a follow-up file. They also circulated an alert to patrol units in the Roma-Condesa corridor. Police did not publicly identify the restaurant or the visitor. They have not described the value of the items taken. Authorities said the investigation relied on camera coverage from public systems and private businesses. In busy dining zones, police say early reports can help secure video before it is overwritten. The goal, officials said, was to identify suspects and recover property without putting diners at risk.
Stop in Roma Sur after second complaint
Police say the investigation began on March 4 during routine patrols in Roma Sur. At the corner of Tlacotalpan and Quintana Roo streets, a 27-year-old woman asked officers for help, authorities said. She told them three people had just approached her and threatened her with a pistol to take her belongings. The woman pointed to a white vehicle parked ahead and said the suspected robbers were inside. The intersection is a short drive from Condesa and draws steady foot traffic. Officers stopped the car and compared the occupants to images from the Condesa restaurant case, police said. Authorities said the three people and the vehicle matched what investigators had seen on camera in February. The officers detained the trio for further checks in accordance with police protocols. The stop, police said, connected an earlier restaurant theft with a separate street robbery report in the same corridor. Officials have not said whether the March 4 victim’s property was recovered on the scene.
Evidence seized and case sent to prosecutors
During a preventive search, police said they found a replica firearm. They also seized three cell phones, a passport, a black wallet, and cash. Authorities did not clarify who owned the passport among the seized items. Authorities said the suspects were two women, ages 48 and 33. A 44-year-old man was detained with them. All three identified themselves as Peruvian nationals, police said. Officers said the items and the white vehicle were secured as evidence. They were handed over to the Public Ministry with the detainees for review. Prosecutors will decide possible charges and whether the cases are formally linked. The SSC said the suspects were informed of their rights. Under Mexican law, detainees are presumed innocent until a court rules otherwise. For foreign visitors, a police report may be required to obtain replacement documents. Officials urge quick reporting so cameras can be checked and footage preserved.
